Reciprocal Club Highlight: The University Club, Washington, D.C.

Washington's historic University Club is situated just a few blocks north of the White House and plays host to many notable Washington personalities. The stately red brick clubhouse has been a landmark in downtown Washington since 1904. Elegance and history pervade the Club's atmosphere, typified by the fine oak paneling of the lobby, its Ionic columns and expansive ceilings. The Club is rich in tradition, starting with the first Club president, William Howard Taft.

WTC Members will enjoy sampling classic American and European cuisine prepared by the Club's award-winning chefs and the old-world service in the elegant Taft Dining Room. For more casual dining, the Club offers the Pershing Grille and the sporting atmosphere of the billiard room, where members can gather for a game of pool, darts, chess or cards. The Club library, considered by many to be the heart and soul of the establishment, contains thousands of new and old books, numerous current periodicals, and Internet access. Adjacent to the library is the Benjamin Franklin Room, which is the perfect place for quiet conversations before an inviting fireplace. The Fitness Center features a full range of weight and aerobic exercise equipment, an indoor swimming pool, squash courts, sauna, and whirlpools.

The upper four floors of the clubhouse comprise 57 tastefully appointed guest rooms and three suites. Weekenders should note that no meals are served on Sunday, however a self-serve continental breakfast is provided on a complimentary basis.

The WTC’s Membership Committee chairman Phil Lorio who has been to the Club many times says, "when staying in D.C., the University Club feels like a home away from home. The staff is friendly and courteous and its facilities provide everything for comfort and relaxation. We enjoy the invigoration of a visit to the fitness center before dinner in the Pershing grille and the peace and quiet of the Library after. The Taft Dining Room is the perfect place to entertain guests. With several trips to Washington a year, it is nice to have the amenities of this private club at our disposal."

For more information, please call the Membership Department at 529-1601, ext. 220 or 226 or you may view the Club's website at www.universityclubdc.com.
