N. Barton Loomis,
President and Chairman of J.H. Menge and Company, and a
member of the World Trade Center for 26 years, took the Fall
2001 session of foreign language classes at the WTC in an
effort to strengthen his comprehension and communication in
Spanish. J.H. Menge and Company provides engineering
equipment to shipyards, refineries and terminals, the dock
building industry and the offshore oil industry in the Gulf
States, the Caribbean, and Latin America.
Already familiar with the language through his
company's extensive work in Latin America, Mr. Loomis used
the advanced Spanish class to practice and improve his
speaking ability. The informal class setting and emphasis on
oral communication proved particularly helpful to Mr. Loomis
while learning new important business terms to aid his
current work in the Panama Canal Zone. Mr. Loomis believes
the WTC offers one of the best values in the New Orleans
area, especially since members receive a 50% discount on
tuition, and he intends to sign up for the Spring session of
classes again.
The WTC offers classes in French, German, Italian,
Japanese, Spanish, and other languages at beginning,
intermediate, and advanced levels. The spring session of the
WTC language classes spans 11 weeks from February 5 to April
25 (there will be no class the week of Mardi Gras, February
10 to 16). Classes are conducted by Alpha Tech
Communications and meet one night per week from 5:30 p.m. to
7:30 p.m. in the WTC building. Tuition is $130 for WTC
members (plus a $45 registration and book fee). To register,
call Alpha Tech at (504) 454-6554.
