NETWORKING GROUP
OFFERS BENEFITS FOR YOUNG MEMBERS
|
|
The
"Under 35 Network" was organized in the fall of 1999 to offer
younger WTC members new opportunities to meet and network. Since that
time, the Committee has hosted numerous parties and events, including the
"Fresh Hope Campaign" to collect toiletry items for homeless and
battered women's shelters last fall.
The group has expanded its size and focus and has been renamed "The
Young Member Network". Members who are 45 years of age and younger
can look forward to receiving mailings of the upcoming events sponsored by
the Young Member Network Committee.
Anyone interested in signing up for the Committee, which meets regularly
to organize activities for young members, can contact Marketing Assistant
Vanessa Bailey at 529-1601 ext. 234 or vbailey@wtcno.org.

Marilyn
and I wish to thank the Plimsoll Club staff for the super
presentation at our 50th anniversary party on Nov 22, 2000. It was
indeed an evening to remember. We have heard nothing but
compliments from those who attended the event. The experience and
efficiency of your staff made our decision making easy. So, thanks
again and save us a space for our 75th.

CAPT. STEPHEN
ROCHON TO RECEIVE 2001 BERTEL AWARD
|
|
On Friday, March 23 Capt. Stephen
Rochon of the U.S. Coast Guard will be the honored recipient of the C.
Alvin Bertel Award at a luncheon in the Plimsoll Club for his outstanding
contributions to the advancement of the Greater New Orleans Port area.
This is the first time in the history of the Bertel Award, which was
established in 1967, that it will be presented to an officer of any
military branch.
Capt. Rochon is an active member of the WTC Transportation Committee. A
native of New Orleans and a graduate of Xavier University of Louisiana and
the National Defense University in Washington, D.C., Capt. Rochon enlisted
in the Coast Guard in 1970 and rose through the ranks during a
distinguished career, culminating in his present assignment as Captain of
the Port of New Orleans and Commanding Officer of the Marine Safety Office
in New Orleans. In these capacities, Capt. Rochon was the Federal-on-Scene
Coordinator and exercised superior leadership last November during the
prompt and successful cleanup of the massive spill of over 13,000 barrels
of crude oil in the Mississippi River created by the tanker Westchester.
It was one of the largest domestic spills by a tanker since the Exxon
Valdez incident.
The award is named after C. Alvin Bertel, who was instrumental in bringing
about a constitutional amendment which provided for the non-political
selection of Port commissioners in the early 1940s. In its early years,
the newly formed Board of Commissioners instituted administrative reforms
which have endured to this day.
To register for the luncheon, visit the WTC website at www.wtcno.org or
call (504) 529-1601, ext. 271.

DONNA
FRAICHE WINS 2000 MEMBERSHIP CAMPAIGN BY A FLIP OF A COIN!
|
|

Congratulations to Donna Fraiche for winning the grand prize of two
tickets anywhere in the world (valued at $5,000), compliments of United
Airlines and DMI Travel for the 2000 Membership Campaign. Donna sponsored
five new members and tied for first place with Yancy Guerin. WTC President
Hank Lauricella broke the tie with a flip of the coin, securing Donna's
victory.
Yancy then became our second place finisher, winning two round-trip
tickets anywhere in the U.S. (valued at $1,000).
Dr. George Schneider, who sponsored 8 new members, was ineligible to win
the grand prize due to his 1996 grand prize victory. In order to reward
him for his truly outstanding efforts, which in this unusual situation
earned him only third place, Dr. Schneider will also receive two round
trips tickets anywhere in the U.S.
Many thanks to all who participated! Stay tuned for tales of of our
winners’ travels around the globe!
